Hi! I’m Alyson, and I’m a translator, editor, proofreader and book blogger. With previous experience working both for a translation agency and an independent publishing house, I am now working full time as a freelancer focusing on my passion for great fiction. I’m currently combining my part-time admin role for the magazine New Books in German with reading German and English fiction for publishers and literary scouts, translating fiction and non-fiction samples for German publishing houses, and proofreading and editing manuscripts for UK publishers. You can read more about my translation and editing work here.
I’ll be posting short reviews of a range of novels here (mostly literary fiction and crime fiction, much of which will be in translation) – you won’t find any long plot descriptions or spoilers, just more of a snappy recommendation. I’ll try and keep my reviews as positive as possible, as I’m not in the business of making writers feel bad about themselves or their work, or telling people what not to read. If I don’t enjoy a book I’ll either stop reading (something which I’ve only done since working in publishing, where time to finish a book is often a luxury!) or I’ll finish it but not post a review. The aim is for this to be a place where readers can find inspiration for what to read next. And I’m always open to book recommendations too!
If you have any comments at all, want to make any suggestions about how/what I post, or if you work in publishing and want to send me a book to review, please just get in touch. I hope you enjoy my blog, and thanks for reading!
